Hi friends. I'm back with another hot take on the latest books I've read. A Quiet Retreat by Kiersten Modglin is due to be released on October 30th, 2022. Something freaky to make you clench your butt cheeks together for Halloween. I hopped on the chance to read it early because I'm grown, and you can't tell me what to do. This one was a little darker than her usual, I was impressed. Let's get into it.
You are cordially invited to visit the new Black Hills Manor Writing Retreat.
That’s how it all begins—with a simple invitation.
For five authors, it’s meant to be the start of a restful week, filled with free food, drinks, and likeminded company.
But shortly after their arrival, things take an unsettling turn.
Broken property, missing items, and strange noises are just some of the odd occurrences that have each member questioning their companions. As suspicions mount, the authors are pitted against each other.
Whom can they trust in a house full of strangers?
With tensions rising, the writers find themselves in the middle of their own mystery. Death, terror, and despair are common elements in their books, but at Black Hills Manor, the murders being plotted are their own.
*Cue spooky music* The synopsis sounded interesting. Overall, this book had a darker feel to it than her other books. I am here for the switch-up! Just in time for Halloween no less. Overall, the story was interesting. It was told from two different timelines that end up mushing together in the end. I enjoy a good story with a dual timeline because it gives the reader the opportunity to see the story develop from two different angles.
The main character seemed a little stressy and depressy. I got the vibe that she was self-loathing for some reason. That ended up making more sense towards the end, but while I was reading, I really wanted to just hop in the story and smack here across the face after a while. Snap out of it girlie! You have work to do!
Like I mentioned, this book had a darker feel than most of her stories which I was really happy about. I feel like the majority of her stories kind of get right there at the edge of dark, but don't quite take the plunge. A Quiet Retreat wasn't exactly a plunge, but she definitely dipped her toe in the water this time. I look forward to seeing where she can take the rest of her stories.
If you want something to read while you're waiting for the kiddos to finish trick or treating, this is definitely the book to grab. There's mystery and there's mayhem, just enough to keep you turning the pages but not so much that it becomes hard to follow.
Go ahead and grab this book so you have something spooky to read for the holidays. Great way to wrap up this year's spooky season. You can grab it on Amazon or on Kiersten's website. If you do decide to read it, please come back and tell me what you thought. Were you spooked? I can't wait to read your thoughts! Find me on Instagram or Facebook and let me know what you think! I can't wait to hear from you.
Until then,
Happy Reading Babes! ❤
